The Founders' Vision
  • Education and learning continue throughout life, and education should be an assistance to life.
  • Education is provided by the total environment of home, school and society and the school should be open to this total environment and provide interaction with it.
The beginning of Abacus

    Students
  • The child's development and maturity depends on the quality of learning opportunities provided, and the school has the responsibility to ensure that children engage actively and live positively, not just cope with life.
  • Opportunities to learn should be provided according to developmental needs, so that the child is challenged and learns spontaneously and with enjoyment.
  • The school environment must take account of physical, cognitive and affective aspects of a child's life.
  • In order to focus on the process of learning, rather than just content or performance, Education must be interactive, participatory and democratic.

The Architect's Contribution

"The trees were the original residents. They CANNOT be moved. But Buildings CAN. be located so as not to necessitate destruction of trees."- Laurie Baker, Architect for Abacus.

Laurie Baker's AbacusThis was the vision that the legendary Laurie Baker had when he designed our school. A place where classrooms may be arranged with plenty of verandah play space, a place to be built between the existing large trees. A vision that has been translated into the buildings we find so beautiful! And with a remarkable sensitivity to the tenets of the Montessori philosophy. The building came up between 1996 & 1998.
